The United States team, the men’s national basketball team, faces France in their first group stage match at the Tokyo Olympics. The team, along with Portland Trail Blazers playmaker Damian Lillard, struggled in exhibition games due to understaffing. Bradley Beal had to drop out of competition due to health and safety protocols, while Khris Middleton, Jrue Holiday and Devin Booker were not yet available due to the NBA Finals, and Kevin Love was unable to overcome persistent calf tension. Keldon Johnson and JaVale McGee completed the final roster for Tokyo.
France have built their own formidable squad, including current NBA Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert. Other mainstays of the NBA in the French team include former Blazer Nicolas Batum as well as Evan Fournier of the Boston Celtics and Frank Ntilikina of the New York Knicks. The French did not perform well in an exhibition match, dropping one match in Japan and another in Spain.
The teams last faced each other at the 2019 FIBA World Cup, where the USA team lost to France in the 89-78 quarter-finals. France placed third behind Argentina and Spain. It looks like the X factor in this game could be which team comes up with the most chemistry.
