French police shot dead a man suspected of beheading and then partially eating a 13-year-old boy.
Authorities were investigating the teenager’s disappearance from a retirement home in Marseille, France on Sunday when their search led them to an address in Tarascon, nearly 100 kilometers away.
It was there that investigators made the gruesome discovery of the boy’s head in a bucket.
“The body found could be that of the minor”, declared Monday to Agence France-Presse the public prosecutor Laurent Gumbau, adding that pieces of flesh had been torn from a shoulder but admitted that it was ” impossible ”to confirm whether it was an act of cannibalism.
Investigators later discovered that a 32-year-old man who allegedly suffered from a psychiatric disorder lived in the apartment.
Police arrived but the man ran off the rooftops, neighbors told the news agency.
He was found three hours later and shot dead by officers.
Police say the suspect was unarmed at the time of his death, and he has not been formally identified as the teenager’s killer.
Autopsies have been ordered for the boy and the suspect.
