“This embassy is not only a hub for diplomats, but a base to continue our new partnership,” said United Arab Emirates Ambassador Mohamed Al Khaja. “It marks a new paradigm for peace and a model for a new collaborative approach to conflict resolution. “
The UAE and Israel announced they were making peace and normalizing their relations last August, in what was called the Abrahamic Accords, and Bahrain, Sudan and Morocco followed soon after. Israel opened an embassy in Abu Dhabi and a consulate in Dubai last month, during Foreign Minister Yair Lapid’s visit to the United Arab Emirates.
The Tel Aviv Stock Exchange was packed with enthusiastic guests for the opening of the embassy, including President Isaac Herzog and former Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi. Lapid was in quarantine because one of his assistants tested positive for COVID-19.
Al Khaja met Herzog in his car on a narrow street in central Tel Aviv, outside the stock exchange building, where passers-by were watching the proceedings from across the street.
The Ambassador escorted the President to the poles outside, where the Ambassador raised the Emirati flag as his country’s anthem was played.
“In the post-COVID world, those who innovate will lead,” the ambassador said. “The UAE and Israel are innovative nations that will harness innovation for the future of the people of the country and the region. The people of the region hope for a prosperous New Middle East. “
However, added the president, “nothing can be more natural or more normal” because the Israelis and the Emiratis have so much in common.
“We are deeply rooted in our land with our eyes fixed on the stars. We are building modern states from the sands of the desert and have made the impossible possible, ”Herzog said.
The venue for the ceremony at TASE was appropriate due to the economic ties between nations, he added.
“With the dialogue between peoples, our two cultures will be enriched”, declared the president.
Herzog thanked UAE leader Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed and former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for their work in bringing the two nations closer together, and stressed that the former “opens the door to a warm friendship between our peoples ”.
