Nuno Espirito Santo was nobody’s first choice as Tottenham Hotspur head coach. You have to think he knows and understands this, and that is why first impressions are so important. In his first comments in charge of Spurs, posted on YouTube and on the club’s social media, Nuno certainly made a good first impression.
Savvy pro football consumers always take videos like these with a fair amount of skepticism. This is a skillfully produced video created by the Tottenham production team to make the anything but smooth process Nuno’s appointment as good as it gets. But it is also important to listen to the words he is saying, and he is saying all the right things.
Nuno above all seems excited and happy to be at Tottenham, and that is the most important thing he has to convey. He’s talkative and affable, gives the impression that he knows what he’s doing and already has plans on how he wants to be successful. He also speaks directly to fans about the pride, and that’s crucial – Nuno has to have the supporters on his side if he has a chance to knock over this train wreck of a club.
According to Alasdair Gold, Espirito Santo is currently “self-insulating” at Hotspur Way after flying to London to sign the documents, a stark reminder that the COVID-19 pandemic is still not over. He will be ready to start working with returning Tottenham players on Monday, the official start of the preseason.
I have reservations about Nuno. I will probably be doing this for a while until we get a better idea of how he wants Spurs to play and the implementation of that style of play. However, I don’t have the animosity personal towards him that I had from the very beginning with José Mourinho. It’s enormous. I want to love Nuno. I’ll give it a chance, probably a few of them. And I hope he succeeds. He certainly got off on the right foot with me via this video.
