Mel said in the candid interview: “In a different life I could have been married to a footballer, dressed in designer clothes and traveled the world.

“I had no idea how close I was to being in the greatest girl group ever.

‘I’d be lying if I said there weren’t times when I wished I could swap places with [Victoria]. As a singer, it made me laugh when she said they sometimes turn off her mic, ”she added.

Mel explained that while it was sometimes hard not to dwell on the past, she didn’t hold it against Victoria.

She claimed that she agreed to be ousted from the group upon realizing that Victoria and her fellow group members Mel B, Emma Bunton, Melanie Chisholm and Geri Halliwell were chosen for their appearance.

Mel, 18, was first selected for the group when she responded to an ad on The Stage looking for singers and dancers.

But the burgeoning pop star was thrown back into obscurity when managers decided her voice was “too loud” for the girl group.

It wasn’t until she saw Mel B’s face in the Wannabe clip that the NHS worker realized the fame she had missed.

Mel confessed that she thought the song was horrible, but said she would have performed the hokey cokey if it made her millions of pounds.

Rather than becoming a global celebrity, Mel worked at a hospital in Huntingdon and now lives in a semi-detached house with her husband and their two children in Cambridgeshire.

Meanwhile, Victoria Beckham has married football superstar husband David and has a shared net worth of £ 500million.

While the Spice Girls have sold stages across the world, Mel has taken to the stage in pubs and at weddings in a group called The Decanters with her brother.
