Newcastle are hoping their pursuit of Joe Willock can pick up steam now after Arsenal tied Emile Smith Rowe, according to reports.

Steve Bruce has been making it clear for some time that he wants to sign a permanent contract with Arsenal youngster Willock after shining on loan at St James’ Park.

And according to Sky Sports, Bruce is hoping Smith Rowe, who signs a new long-term deal in the Emirates, will now convince the Gunners to let Willock go for good.

Newcastle manager Steve Bruce remains in pursuit of Arsenal midfielder Joe Willock

Smith Rowe, who has been the target of Aston Villa all summer, wrote his new Arsenal deal on Thursday afternoon and was presented with the club’s iconic No.10 shirt, previously worn by Dennis Bergkamp, Mesut Ozil, Jack Wilshere and Robin van Persie.

Smith Rowe shone for Arsenal in what was a turbulent 2020-21 campaign, with his good form meaning they could send Willock on loan to Newcastle, and he is set to be a key player again next season.

Smith Rowe and Wllock could well compete for the same starting place in attacking midfielder under Mikel Arteta next season.

But now, having secured a new contract for their academy star, the Gunners might be more receptive to Willock leaving the club this summer.

Willock shined on loan at St James’ Park last season – scoring eight times in 14 league appearances

Willock moved to St James’ Park for the second half of last season and quickly made a name for himself scoring essential goals to help Newcastle come out of the relegation zone well.

The 21-year-old midfielder has scored eight goals in 14 top-level appearances and made his name in the Premier League history books by becoming the youngest player to score in seven consecutive matches at the end of the campaign .

And unsurprisingly, Bruce is desperate to bring Willock back to St James’ Park permanently.

Speaking after Newcastle’s friendly loss to York City last weekend, Bruce said: “Like I said, it’s really Arsenal’s decision, and until Arsenal take a decision – much like all the big clubs, they’re taking a look at the preseason. -season – we will continue to monitor and harass.

“We would like to do something, but that’s always Arsenal’s call. “

Following Thursday’s news regarding Smith Rowe, Bruce may now have more hope of making a deal for Willock – who is in desperate need of regular first-team football.

It’s still unclear what Arsenal will do with Willock, but they could likely sell over £ 20million in a bid to offset their own expenses this summer.
