Manchester United have confirmed they have reached a deal with Real Madrid to sign center-back Raphael Varane.
After signing Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho on a £ 73million deal last week, the 28-year-old is expected to be the next arrival.
United said in a statement: “Manchester United are delighted to announce that the club have reached an agreement with Real Madrid for the transfer of French international defender and World Cup winner Raphael Varane, subject to review. medical and the finalization of the conditions of the player. “
Varane is not expected to be able to undergo a medical examination until next week due to current coronavirus travel restrictions in the UK. The fee is € 50million (£ 42.7million) and the defender will sign a four-year contract with an option for an additional 12 months.
Varane won four Champions League titles during a medal-rich stint at the Bernabéu and was a key part of the France squad that won the World Cup in 2018.
United had been interested in the defender before joining Madrid from Lens in 2011, making 360 appearances in all competitions in Spain.
Varane joins Harry Maguire – the world’s most expensive defender – Victor Lindelöf, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe as center-back options for Ole Gunnar Solskjær.
