Manchester City’s scheduled pre-season friendly at sister club Troyes later this month has been called off due to coronavirus travel restrictions affecting France.
The deletion of the July 31 game leaves Pep Guardiola’s side with just two more games, including the Community Shield against Leicester, before starting the Premier League title defense at Tottenham on August 15.
The club have said they have no plans to replace the friendly with another pre-season game.
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola will only have two games to prepare for the new season
City called off the game after the UK government’s tightening of quarantine rules for travelers returning from France this week made prosecution impossible.
France is now placed in an ‘amber-plus’ category for travel, which means people still have to self-isolate for 10 days after entering the UK, even if they are fully vaccinated.
The news comes after City announced this week that their first preseason friendly, against Preston on July 27, will be played behind closed doors at their Academy Stadium. The move was taken as a precautionary measure after a number of positive tests for Covid-19 forced their academy building to close last week.
A club statement read: “Manchester City are disappointed to confirm that our planned pre-season friendly at CFG (City Football Group) ES Troyes AC has been called off.

“Both clubs have explored all avenues to be able to play the game, but recent changes by the UK government to the quarantine rules for travelers returning from France have made the required restrictions too difficult to overcome.
“Pep Guardiola’s first team will remain in Manchester and continue their pre-season preparations at City Football Academy. There are no plans to replace the ESTAC friendly match with another pre-season match. ‘
Troyes, who was promoted back to Ligue 1 last season, are said to have been strong opposition for City in preparation for the new campaign. The club joined the CFG team last year.
Guardiola’s squad started pre-season training on Monday, but a number of senior stars have yet to report after competing in international tournaments over the summer. The Community Shield takes place on August 7.
