The Brazilian is believed to have taken the hit while at the club’s pre-season training camp in Surrey, from where he returned home early and then missed Saturday’s friendly loss to QPR.
The United boss initially revealed that Telles would only be “out for a few weeks” but has since given the grim update that the full-back will in fact skip the first three games of the new season.
Speaking to United’s official website, Solskjaer said: “Unfortunately this is worse news on Alex Such than we expected.
“His ankle injury is a little more serious than we expected and he will be out for a little while at least, the whole of August I think. “
This means United will be deprived of Telles for the curtain-raiser against Leeds on August 14, before missing back-to-back trips to Southampton and Wolves respectively.
With first-choice left-back Luke Shaw will also miss those ties as he enjoys an extended break after his Euro 2020 exploits with England, Telles’ absence presents a problem for the Red Devils.
Not the only twisted United star who could miss the start of the season, Anthony Martial is still healing a knee injury he sustained in May.
United will likely be without Marcus Rashford, who reportedly compounded a lingering shoulder injury while with England at the European Championships.

Solskjaer gave an update on the striker, revealing: “Of course he [Rashford] left just to think about it a bit. We have to take the best course of action for him and the club. We always discuss this with the experts. “
This follows reports that Rashford is considering discussing the idea of blow surgery with United hierarchy.
United are likely to be reluctant to grant him their wish, given that if the England international were to have shoulder surgery, he could be missed as much as the first three months of the season.
