Manchester United have reached a deal with Real Madrid to sign French center-back Raphael Varane, the Premier League giants announced on Tuesday.
Manchester United are delighted to announce that the club have reached an agreement with Real Madrid for the transfer of French international defender and World Cup winner Raphaël Varane, subject to medical examination and finalization of conditions players ”, indicates a press release from the club.
However, it is not expected that Varane will be able to undergo a medical examination until next week due to the current restrictions on coronaviruses in the UK.
No fees were disclosed, but UK media reported the deal was worth £ 34million ($ 47million) rising to £ 48million with additions.
Varane, 28, a 2018 World Cup winner, has one more season on his contract at the Santiago Bernabeu.
He left French club Lens for Madrid in 2011 and has since made 360 appearances in all competitions for Madrid, winning 18 top honors, including four Champions League titles.
If his move to Old Trafford was completed, Varane would find himself in contention for a place in the center of United’s defense with club captain Harry Maguire, Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof.
United finished second in the Premier League last season but were 12 points behind title winners and local rivals Manchester City in the race to be crowned champions of England.
The Red Devils haven’t won a major trophy since the 2017 Europa League, with United’s last Premier League title coming in famed manager Alex Ferguson’s last season before his retirement eight years ago.
