Manchester United are getting closer to a sensational £ 68million double transfer as they seek to secure deals for Raphael Varane and Kieran Trippier, according to reports.

The Red Devils have already agreed to a £ 72.9million transfer for Jadon Sancho – with an official announcement imminently awaited – and have now turned their attention to strengthening their defense.

Discussions have taken place with representatives of Real Madrid defender Varane and now The Sun reports that the World Cup winner has agreed to move to Old Trafford.

United’s hierarchy feared the Frenchman would use their interest to land an exceptional new deal at the Bernabeu – a tactic employed by Sergio Ramos in 2015.

But Varane’s side have reportedly negotiated the terms of a five-year contract and a move to Manchester is now seen as imminent, although fees have yet to be agreed with Real.

The Spanish giants, however, have little leverage in negotiations with Varane having made it clear he is unwilling to extend his current contract which expires next year – when he would be free to go for nothing.

United hope that a royalty of around £ 50million will satisfy Real and The sunAccording to Varane’s report, deals for Varane and Trippier are expected to be announced “towards the end of next week”.

Atletico Madrid right-back Trippier is keen to return to the Premier League and talks of a £ 18million transfer are now ‘in the final stages’.

If both deals were made for these fees, United’s summer spending would be around £ 140million before they even played their first preseason friendly.

Trippier’s versatility is a big draw to manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – the former Spurs man who can play right-back, left-back or full-back – and he is seen as a more offensive option than ‘Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
