With a deal for Sancho alright, French international defender Varane is the next priority for United director of football John Murtough. If they want to mount a sustained challenge for Manchester City’s crown, the Red Devils know they need better quality at the heart of the defense.
Harry Maguire once again showed why he commanded such a high transfer fee when he excelled at Euro 2020. This was despite entering the tournament battling for fitness after an ankle injury in end of season.
But to truly compete with City for the Premier League title, the widespread belief is that an upgrade on Victor Lindelof must be signed.
Luckily for United, that deal appears to be almost out of date. On Thursday, two reports from Spain claimed Varane will make the trip and Real Madrid have sanctioned his sale. And with fees set to be finalized, there is growing hope that his signature will be secure before the end of the month.
But the Manchester Evening News say they are looking to secure another ‘important’ signing once a deal for Varane is struck.
While the MEN doesn’t shed any light on who it might be, they suggest Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has two key positions in mind. As such, the United boss is keen to strengthen himself in both midfield and right-back.
In reaction to this piece, the Daily Express believes England right-back Kieran Trippier will likely be their main target.
The Red Devils have already saw an offer – estimated at £ 10million – rejected for the right-back of Atletico Madrid. however, with the player who was looking to return to England, United could soon launch a second offer.
A move to the north-west of England would reunite the defender with his family after leaving for Madrid in 2019.
Solskjaer and United should not be deterred, however.
Atletico are said to be asking for costs of around £ 20million for the former Burnley and Spurs man.
However, a compromise deal could be found with the two parties likely to meet somewhere in the middle.
Trippier started the Euro 2020 final in England and assisted Luke Shaw in his first opening match at Wembley.

Trippier suspicious of transfer speculation
The 30-year-old is wanted by United as a cover and competition for right-back and left-back positions.
His signing could even allow United to move to both Diogo Dalot and Alex Telles, who have been linked with pullouts. The latter was mentioned as a possible target for José Mourinho’s Roma.
Speaking ahead of the Euro 2020 semi-final, Trippier has done his best to minimize any discussion about a transfer.
“I just enjoyed the season [at Atletico] and we won the title ”, Trippier Told The Guardian.
“I left with England, we play against Denmark and I’m not focusing on my club or what’s going on.
“I’m just focused on England and I try my best if I play. If I don’t play, I still give 100 percent.
He added: “It has been an amazing season and it motivates me to win more, even at my age.
“Going back to England gives me real confidence. Maybe I can share this experience with others who haven’t won anything.
“Again, we have players winning trophies with their clubs now and they all have this winning mentality. “
