The route is based on the Google-owned Dunant submarine cable that connects Richmond, Virginia, to Paris, France.
“No other submarine cable route approaches capacity levels crossing the transatlantic,” said Alan Mauldin, research director at TeleGeography.
Mauldin added: “For the future, there is no doubt that huge new capacity will be needed on this route. Lumen’s decision to increase its capacity across the Atlantic makes perfect sense. “
The 6,600 km (4,101 miles) Dunant Cable runs from Virginia Beach, Virginia to Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez on the French Atlantic coast. Thanks to its 12-fiber spatial multiplexing (SDM) design, this cable can transmit 250 TB of data per second.
Lumen says its new transatlantic fiber route will provide Washington, DC’s largest data center corridor with a direct and efficient link to Europe, including Paris and Frankfurt. Additionally, Lumen’s submarine route will offer operational diversity, latency, and custom routing options.
“We are in an era of ‘more’. The need for more online content, more applications and more cloud services across continents is not going to abate anytime soon, ”said Laurinda Pang, President of Global Customer Success at Lumen.
Pang continued, “This is why this undersea infrastructure is so important. The capacity that Lumen will deliver on Dunant’s submarine cable can be scaled to meet growing broadband customer demands for years to come. With our comprehensive transatlantic submarine portfolio, customers will benefit from diverse routes, low latency, and connection to one of the most interconnected and peered networks in the world. “
Lumen plans to offer its data and network services on the Dunant underwater system by September 2021.
