ANAHEIM – In case there is still any doubt, Friday provided a clear message: The As are all ready for 2021.

In what has turned out to be one of the most frenetic trade deadlines in some time, the A’s have become one of the most active clubs by making another deal just before the final buzzer, acquiring wide receiver Yan Gomes and l Nationals utility Josh Harrison in exchange for three minor leagues – wide receiver Drew Millas (Oakland No.28 prospect, according to the MLB pipeline) and right-hangers Seth Shuman and Richard Guasch.

Friday’s five-player deal makes them four players acquired by the A’s over the past five days as they prepare for their attempt to reach the playoffs for a fourth straight year, which currently sees them holding the second place in the American League Wild Card. It started on Monday when the club responded to their late-inning need for another arm by trading southpaw Andrew Chafin from the Cubs. Then came the first addition to improve an inconsistent offense with the acquisition of Starling Marte from the Marlins on Wednesday.

Gomes, 34, was a big part behind the plaque for Washington in his run for a World Series title in 2019. The 2018 all-star and 10-year veteran came in on Friday cutting .271 / .323 / .454 with nine circuits and 35 RBI. He was also linked with the Blue Jays as late as Thursday night.

Sean Murphy believes he will remain Oakland’s main supporter. Gomes is providing an upgrade to the current save option Aramis Garcia, who has struggled to play a limited role this season.

Harrison, 34, offers supreme versatility. While most of his time is spent at second base, the double All-Star has also appeared in games at third and all three outfield positions this season. Harrison reduced .294 / .366 / 434 with six homers and 38 RBIs in 90 games with the Nationals. His presence could allow the A’s to transform veteran second baseman Jed Lowrie into a squad role as designated hitter with Mitch Moreland.
