Party sources told The Indian Express that the names of Munger Rajiv MP Ranjan Singh aka Lalan Singh, JD (U) Parliamentary Council Chairman Upendra Kushwaha and spokesperson KC Tyagi are vying for the post of national president.
“With the party looking to invest in Upendra Kushwaha’s leadership, it seems a natural choice. But (Chief Minister of Bihar) Nitish Kumar could put this decision on hold for now… This is where Lalan Singh has a good chance, ”said a source.
Tyagi, a former Rajya Sabha MP who has defended the party on key issues as a spokesperson, has an outside chance of becoming the party’s leader. “What’s in Tyagi’s favor is his ability to connect with regional parties outside of Bihar, especially as part of the JD (U) expansion offer. But what goes against him is his label of outsider, ”another source told Patna.
The JD (U) national executive meeting is also expected to address its plans to challenge the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections as well as the reiteration of a caste census request.
