Great Britain are set to play their second match at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and this time they face host Japan, knowing that victory will secure a place in the bottom eight.
Hege Riise’s side beat Chile in their opener, a brace from Ellen White giving a 2-0 victory – and a top-two spot will be theirs if three more points follow here, after that Japan itself did not draw 1-1 in the first round of games. The head coach was impressed with the performance of the victory over the South Americans, knowing there was room for improvement as well. “The way we started the game was amazing,” she said after the GB team won. “The first 30 minutes were the best we’ve played and we kept going. It was not pretty the whole game, but we fought and we managed to get the result we wanted.
Now the depth and talent on display across the squad could be showcased, with changes expected for this game for Great Britain. For the hosts, the pressure is on to get a positive result and make sure they don’t make a quick exit – although with some of the top thirds also set to reach the quarter-finals, it won’t be. a case of all hope lost if they suffer defeat.
