According to sources at the Presidential Palace, Bolsonaro has experienced abdominal pain at night and is undergoing tests at the Armed Forces Hospital in Brasilia.
The special secretariat for communication clarified: “On medical advice, the president will be under observation for a period of 24 to 48 hours, not necessarily in the hospital”.
Bolsonaro has been complaining for over a week of hiccups, saying it causes him difficulty when speaking in public.
On Tuesday evening, he raised the issue in an interview with supporters. “Guys, I’m speechless, guys. If I start to talk too much, the hiccups come back. The hiccups are back, ”he said.
He suggested the illness could be linked to medications he was taking due to surgery for dental implants.
According to sources, Bolsonaro is doing well. The possibility of performing surgery in the next few months to remove a hernia in the abdominal area is also being assessed.
In January 2019, Bolsonaro underwent surgery to remove a fitted colostomy bag after being stabbed four months earlier during the presidential campaign.
Last July, he contracted Covid-19, after months of downplaying the severity of the virus.
The right-wing populist has been heavily criticized for his handling of the pandemic, which has claimed more than 500,000 lives in Brazil, one of the worst-affected countries in the world.
The country has suffered from a slow rollout of the vaccine and fierce resistance to containment measures from Bolsonaro’s government.
The president is currently facing a parliamentary inquiry led by the Brazilian Senate, which is investigating whether the federal government has intentionally delayed the vaccine rollout in line with its herd immunity strategy.
