Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick on Friday vowed never to let the state become Democrat, calling the state the “last man standing” electorally against future Democratic presidential candidates.
“There are a lot of conservative and red states across the country, but if we fall America falls,” Patrick told the audience at the opening night of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Dallas. “The New York, California… election votes combined mean we could never again elect a conservative Republican to the White House. “
Texas has 38 electoral votes, the most of any reliable Republican state and the second of any state after California, which is a reliable Democratic state with 55 electoral votes.
Texas last voted for a Democrat in a presidential election in 1976, when Jimmy Carter defeated Gerald Ford.
THE BATTLE IN TEXAS ON ACCESS TO THE VOTE ENTERING THE SECOND ROUND
But the gap narrowed in the last election: in November 2020, former President Trump beat Democrat Joe Biden by less than 6 percentage points, up from 9 points over Hillary Clinton in 2016. All four last presidential elections before that of Texas were double-digit wins for Republican candidates.
Democrats spent millions of dollars in Texas last year in a failed attempt (yet again) to overthrow the state, hoping Latinos and suburban voters would vote for Biden. But it never materialized.
“I can tell you that as Lieutenant Governor of this great state that I am fortunate and honored to serve, we are never going to let this happen,” said Patrick.
He said Texas was “ready to fight for everything you hold dear no matter where you live in America” and promised in 2024 that “Trumpsim will rise again!” ”
Patrick praised Trump, who will speak at the conference on Sunday afternoon.
“His policies will live on forever. He taught America to stand up and fight for this nation, ”said Patrick.
