Former Edo State Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Tourism, Mr. Osaze Osemwingie-Ero, who was arrested by police in France in November 2019, may have been released.

Reports on social media then claimed that Osemwingie-Ero had been arrested and detained by INTERPOL in France for allegedly detaining $ 2 million. The report was trending in December 2019.

The political appointee was then serving under Governor Godwin Obaseki.

The former commissioner could be seen in an 18-second video now online, apparently shot at an airport, as he pushed his luggage and gave elbow greetings, in accordance with COVID-19 protocol.

A voice in the background could also be heard shouting “return of the man, return of the man” in celebration of his release.

Confirming the release to journalists in Benin, a source close to the former commissioner who does not want to be named, revealed that he has regained his freedom, but would not want to speak to anyone yet.

“I heard he was in London. I chatted with him on WhatsApp a few minutes ago… It’s true. He is out, but not ready to speak to the press, ”the source revealed.

An Edo government official said at the time that Osemwingie-Ero must have been arrested by INTEPOL for an offense committed before being appointed by Governor Obaseki.

He denied that the arrest was linked to money laundering.

“But we can unequivocally confirm that whatever the issues are, they are totally personal and have nothing to do with the Edo State government or Governor Godwin Obaseki,” the official said at the time.
