A The U.S. flight was canceled after 30 teenagers on a jet refused to wear face masks, according to reports.
Dozens of people were stranded when the captain of an American Airlines service from North Carolina to Nassau in the Bahamas refused to take off.
Flight 893 was forced to remain on the ground because the youths reportedly failed to comply with legal requirements at 9:30 a.m. local time on Monday.
As a result, 17 and 18 year olds were forced to stay overnight at Charlotte Douglas International Airport because they were too young to check in at a hotel.
Passengers also on the service said the Boston group was “very obnoxious.”
They are believed to be on their way to the Bahamas for a graduation trip.
Malik Banks, who was sitting next to them, said: “It was bad. First they were screaming. They cursed. They were very obnoxious.
Another passenger, Stephanie Krzywanski, filmed the bust and called the local news station WLTX from the cabin.
She said: “There was a group of high school students celebrating their graduation who were rowdy and didn’t wear their masks.
“What happened was a lot of back and forth between, I guess, the parents. “
Christina Randolph added, “All they had to do was follow the rules, put on the mask, sit there. No smart comments. And they couldn’t do it.
An airline spokesperson confirmed to WLTX that the group was “non-compliant” with the federal mask mandate which requires passengers to wear face coverings on planes.
Police sources said no one had been arrested.
The standard contacted American Airlines for further comment.
