Explosion and fire reported near oil field in Caspian Sea – .


A large explosion and fire were reported in the Caspian Sea on Sunday evening, with images shared on social media showing a fireball that could be seen from Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. It is not known what caused the explosion.

Ibrahim Akhmedov, spokesman for the Azerbaijani state energy company SOCAR, told Russian news agency TASS that the company believed the explosion was likely “the eruption of a mud volcano.” no information about an emergency in the country’s offshore oil infrastructure or industrial facilities, according to the Azerbaijani state news agency.

The ministry is investigating the incident and said further information will be released to the public.

The Azerbaijani Caspian shipping company announced on Sunday evening that no explosions had occurred on any of its ships.
