Customers evacuated from Asda hypermarket after ceiling collapsed – latest updates – .

Customers have been evacuated from an Asda supermarket in Ashton-under-Lyne after its ceiling partially collapsed.
Photos taken inside the store on Cavendish Street appear to show part of the collapsed ceiling near the self-service checkouts.

Debris can also be seen strewn on the ground.

Witnesses say customers were evacuated following the incident, which allegedly occurred just before 5 p.m. today.

A spokesperson for the supermarket giant said an investigation into the cause was underway.

It is not yet known if anyone has been injured.

Paul Bowers, who was in the store when the ceiling collapsed, said: “I was walking around and I went down one of the aisles and heard that big bang.

“They were calling everyone to checkout, so I went to see if anyone was hurt.

“Someone told me that a woman with a pram was just below and managed to escape at the last second.

“I thought something was going on when I first heard it. Then there was a lot of dust everywhere.

“They told everyone to stop shopping and leave the building. “
