VERSAILLES, Ky. (LEX 18) – A COVID-19 outbreak has been reported in Woodford County, and it is likely linked to a recent gathering of churches in the area.
Health officials say at least 40 people have tested positive for the virus in Woodford County in the past two weeks, the majority of whom have not been vaccinated.

The Woodford County Health Department says it knows only one of this group of people hospitalized with the virus. Most have symptoms typically associated with COVID-19, including fever, fatigue, and shortness of breath.

Public health director Cassie Prather said they were doing genomic sequencing to determine if it was the Delta variant. She says the health department is concerned about the speed at which the virus will spread.

Health officials did not specify the church involved in the outbreak.

“It just shows that it can happen anywhere,” said Cassie Prather, director of public health for the Woodford County Department of Health.

Woodford County has the highest vaccination rates in Kentucky at 65%.

But, Prather said, the county continues to encourage unvaccinated people to receive the vaccines.

“Our job is not done,” she said. “There is always a risk and the risk of getting infected far outweighs any kind of risk that might be associated with getting the vaccine. “
