The annulment of Britney Spears’ marriage to her childhood sweetheart Jason Alexander was the first glimpse of the singer’s powerlessness over her own life and has had a devastating impact on her ever since.
That’s the point of view of now-retired divorce lawyer Mark Goldberg that is first expressed in an exclusive interview with DailyMail.com.
The Pittsburgh-based lawyer has revealed how a distraught Alexander turned to him after being kicked out of Britney’s life following their now infamous 55-hour marriage.
He revealed that neither Britney nor Alexander wanted the cancellation which he said was forced on them by the singer’s mother and management.
And he recalled how Alexander contacted him in a series of touching phone calls asking for advice after the singer’s mother kicked him out of their Las Vegas hotel suite and the life of his new one. married less than three days after their marriage in January 2004.
According to Goldberg, 80, the case stayed with him even though Alexander did not retain his services because he “felt sorry for the child,” which he told DailyMail.com, was clearly in love with Britney and hoping they could have a future together.

Former divorce lawyer Mark Goldberg reveals that neither Britney nor Alexander wanted the annulment he said was forced on them by the singer’s mother Lynne and management.
Britney made headlines with her explosive testimony in a Los Angeles court last month when she blew the lid off the guardianship in which she claims she has been jailed for 13 years.
In a long and passionate speech, she furiously demanded that her father Jamie, 69, be removed from his position as curator and claimed that, among other things, guardianship had prevented her from marrying her five-year-old boyfriend, Sam Asghari, 27, or even removing her IUD so that she can have children with him as she wishes.

Britney has now refused to work as her father exercises legal influence over her life and finances.
Last week, she scored an important victory when the court granted her the right to choose her own lawyer and she retained Matthew Rosengart. He succeeded court-appointed lawyer Samuel Ingham, who earned a salary of over $ 500,000 a year during his tenure and has seen previous efforts to have Jamie remove the dropout when he didn’t. filed the singer’s request on time.
Spears, 39, was seen with a diamond ring on her engagement finger on Sunday as she had coffee with Asghari.
Now Goldberg has recalled the bitter end of his first youth marriage in his relationship with Alexander, also now 39 years old.
And he backed up Alexander’s own claims last week when Alexander, who grew up with Britney in Kentwood, Louisiana, said he was “tricked” into agreeing to a cancellation and mistakenly believed he and Britney still had a future.
According to Goldberg, “I felt sorry for the child. He really hoped and believed that he and Britney would get back together.
By the time Alexander contacted him, Goldberg had a tremendous reputation as one of the nation’s top divorce lawyers and had been named one of the nation’s top 100.
He said, ‘Jason was looking for advice. He was very emotional and upset. Britney had called him to come to Las Vegas. She was there with friends if I remember correctly, and she paid for her plane ticket to come.
“If I remember correctly, it was Britney’s idea to get married. He said they hadn’t been drinking or using drugs – or at least they weren’t drunk.
The annulment documents said Britney “lacked understanding of her actions, as she was unable to agree to the marriage.”
But Goldberg disputed this and said, “I have asked him several times [if they were drunk or on drugs] because if I was to portray him I needed to know all the facts and it was clear they weren’t… they really really loved each other.
The annulment papers stated that Britney, “lacked understanding of her actions, to the extent that she was unable to agree to the marriage,” but Goldberg said: “If I recall, it was the Britney’s idea of getting married. He said they hadn’t been drinking or using drugs – or at least they weren’t drunk ”. The Little White Chapel in Las Vegas where the couple got married is pictured

Goldberg said: “The two went to a wedding chapel alone and got married, then returned to the hotel suite and their friends, all happy.
“The next morning they called Britney’s mother and all hell broke loose. “
It was, Goldberg said, the singer’s mother, Lynne, and management who were behind the cancellation. He has no recollection of his father being mentioned at the time.
He said: “It was the mother who stepped in and fitted into her daughter’s life.
“She came to Las Vegas, threw Jason out and got him a plane ticket home. “
Goldberg asked Alexander if they consummated the marriage and he told him they did.
He said: ‘I explained that we could challenge the cancellation. From what I could see, it was not appropriate. They had married in good faith, they both had the ability to say “Yes” and they had consummated the marriage.
“I told him if they broke up it would probably be a divorce. “
Goldberg told DailyMail.com he had a conversation with one of Britney’s lawyers on the East Coast in which he informed her that he would “vigorously challenge” any cancellations on Alexander’s behalf.
He told DailyMail.com he had already contacted a divorce attorney in Las Vegas to handle Alexander’s case if he wanted to.
Instead, Goldberg said, after three or four conversations, Alexander told her he was going to do whatever Britney’s mother and management wanted.
Goldberg said, “He told me, ‘They want an annulment. I love her, I think she loves me, we’ll see what the future holds. “
– I explained it to him. I told him we could fight the cancellation, but I think in his heart Jason was thinking and hoping that if he accepted, he and Britney would both get back together.
“It wasn’t her mother’s business, but Britney was controlled and has been controlled since she was a young girl.
“She gave in to her mother’s demands. Honestly, I pity the girl, and I pity the child [Jason].
“The mother came in and threw Jason out, bought him a plane ticket and sent him to pack his bags. It was Britney’s idea for him to come to Las Vegas and he was happy to do it because he loved her.
“But she has been in the strict hands of her parents all her life – her mother, then her father who made so much money with her. There is no love, no respect there. There is nothing there. ‘
Over the weekend, Britney posted a video showing dance moves around the house. She was spotted with a ring on her engagement finger as she stepped out for coffee in LA with Asghari on Sunday
Goldberg continued, “I really think this particular event had a negative impact on Britney Spears’ life – the way she was vetted and the toll that took its toll. “
“The whole situation has stayed with me throughout the years because I feel sorry for the child. He really hoped they would get back together. Instead, she moved on with her life and career and remarried.
According to Goldberg, “Jason was confused because he loved Britney and didn’t want to hurt her, but he was very scared of his mother and her direction.
“It wasn’t a stranger she had just picked up. They had known each other for years. He thought that if he played the game and did as they asked, she would come, and he and Britney would be together.
Instead, as soon as he signed the documents with an NDA, Alexander discovered that his calls to Spears went unanswered and his number had been changed.
The star announced her engagement to dancer Kevin Federline in July 2004, just seven months after her brief marriage to Alexander.
The couple had two sons, Sean, 15, and Jayden, 14, before Spears filed for divorce in 2006 in a split that was finalized the following year.
