Black Widow Director Cate Shortland is hoping Marvel fans will see the film in theaters even though it will be available on Disney +.
After more than a year of speculation, Disney finally confirmed in March that it would release Black Widow on its streaming service for a Premier Access price at the same time it opens in theaters.
While other filmmakers like Christopher Nolan and Dune director Denis Villeneuve have publicly opposed their new films getting hybrid streaming and theatrical releases, Cate Shortland has taken a different approach to Black Widow.
“Well, we made this movie to be seen in theaters, and it’s not seen so much in theaters, it feels in theaters because we made the sound and the music, and just the huge. beautiful show had to be seen on a big screen, ”she said Deadline.
“So as a director I want people, if they’re safe, to see it in that environment, but I know some people can’t for a lot of reasons, a pandemic and also a lot of reasons. So, it’s really cool that other people can still see the movie. “
Disney takes a distinct approach with Black Widow than he did with some of his animated releases, like Luca and Soul did not actually require additional payment to be viewed on Disney +.
Anyone wishing to broadcast Black Widow at its release date must have a Disney + subscription, and be ready to pay $29.99 / 19,99 £ own a digital copy of the film. Premier Access is not available to those without a Disney + membership.
Black Widow is in theaters on July 7 in the UK and on Disney+ with Premier Access at July 9th. In the US, it will be released on July 9 in both theaters and on Disney + with Premier Access.
