President Biden is due to visit the office of the Director of National Intelligence on Tuesday afternoon amid the intelligence community’s ongoing investigation into the origins of COVID-19.
The intelligence community is “aggressively” investigating the origins of COVID-19, after the president revealed in May that the US intelligence community had “merged around two probable scenarios” for the origins of COVID-19 , “Including whether it emerged from human contact with an infected animal or from a laboratory accident”, and called for “further follow-up”.
THE INTEL COMMUNITY “AGGRESSIVELY” INVESTIGATION OF THE ORIGINS OF COVID-19
The president called on the intelligence community to “redouble their efforts to collect and analyze information that may bring us closer to a definitive conclusion, and report to me in 90 days,” Biden said.
It’s been 62 days since Biden’s announcement.
Last week, in an interview with NPR, CIA Director Bill Burns said the intelligence community at this point “cannot offer a definitive conclusion as to whether this is due to an accident. laboratory or if it is due to natural transmission from infected animals to humans ”.
“We’re working really hard on this,” Burns said. “It’s not an academic problem. I mean, it not only affects the hundreds of thousands and millions of people around the world who have been affected by it, but it’s also absolutely critical as we look to the future, not just in the United States, but in other parts of the world – on how to avoid another pandemic crisis of this magnitude. ”
Burns said it was “extremely important to get to the bottom of this”.

“And the two realities are that the Chinese government was not transparent, did not fully cooperate with the WHO investigation initially – and it has been suggested more recently that it would also refuse to cooperate with a follow-up, ”Burns said. “And it is deeply unfortunate. ”
He added, “We will continue to do all we can to collect on this, work with the rest of the intelligence community and provide the best possible answers on this matter. ”
Burns, however, admitted that it is “possible” that the intelligence community “can never come to a definitive conclusion” on the origins of COVID-19, but stressed that it will “not be for lack of hard work or effort on this question to try to find out as much as possible about what happened. ”
BIDEN: THE INTEL COMMUNITY DECLINED BETWEEN “TWO PROBABLE SCENARIOS” ON THE SOURCE OF THE COVID-19 EPIDEMIC
Meanwhile, the president is expected to address the intelligence community workforce and its leaders during his visit to thank them for their work in what the White House has described as a “difficult time” for the community during the Trump administration.
“He’s someone who believes in the role of the civil servant intelligence community,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said on Monday in a preview of the president’s visit. “He thinks they’re the backbone of our government, and he certainly will clearly do that. ”

Psaki was asked if Biden would have a different or contrasting message from his predecessor, former President Trump, who was skeptical of the intelligence community throughout his administration due to the investigation into to determine whether his campaign colluded with the Russians to influence the 2016 presidential election, and the subsequent investigation into the origins of that investigation and whether it started incorrectly.
Psaki responded on Monday, saying reporters could “make the inherent contrast,” but said she didn’t think it would be “a central part of her message” during Biden’s visit to ODNI.
