Texas Democratic lawmakers who left the state earlier this week in an attempt to block passage of a GOP election bill are receiving financial assistance from Willie Nelson and the former Rep. According to the Dallas Morning News, O’Rourke, whose national profile soared in 2018 as he campaigned to topple Sen. Ted CruzRafael (Ted) Edward CruzCruz trolled on Twitter for criticizing Democrats who fled Texas. (R-Texas), helped raise more than $ 525,000 to cover the expenses of Texas Democratic lawmakers while in Washington, DC

Nelson also donated $ 5,000 to the cause, the newspaper reports, while encouraging others to donate.

The group of Democratic state lawmakers are reportedly staying in a hotel near the White House and are expected to stay in Washington for a month, racking up thousands of dollars in daily expenses.

Dozens of state Democrats fled Texas on Monday in an attempt to deny Republicans the quorum needed for a special legislative session, delaying consideration of the elections bill.

Among the proposals included in the legislation that Democrats say will make it more difficult for citizens to vote in the state are measures that would put limits on early voting and curbside voting, banning people from voting. 24 hour polling centers and limiting drop boxes.

The Texas Democrats’ move drew applause from Democrats in Congress and the White House, while GOP lawmakers criticized the move as a public relations stunt and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) has threatened with arrest for lawmakers on their return to the state.

The Dallas Morning News reports that a number of Republican National Committee assistants also recently demonstrated outside the hotel where Democratic lawmakers are staying in protest.
