As coronavirus infections increase in Maryland, some reveal why they won’t get vaccinated; Hogan declares ‘breakthrough’ infections less than 1% – CBS Baltimore

ANNAPOLIS, Maryland (WJZ) — Less than half of Baltimore City residents are fully immunized. Dondrick Ford says he is among those who are hesitant. “I’m not even going to lie to you, I’m not vaccinated, but I’m going to get the shot,” Ford told WJZ investigator Mike Hellgren.
He said the recent increase in COVID-19 cases fueled by the more contagious Delta variant had changed his mind.

“Even though I have concerns about vaccinations, for me it will probably save my life,” Ford said.

Hospitalizations increased on Tuesday. There are currently 208 people hospitalized with COVID-19 including 140 in acute care and 49 in intensive care.

In some neighborhoods, less than 30% of people have taken the vaccine. Maryland recorded more than 400 new infections for the first time since May on Wednesday.

Despite this, Kevin BooDoo told Hellgren he still wasn’t ready to get shot.

“I have not been vaccinated. I don’t think enough research has been done, ”said Boodoo, who told us he wears his mask whenever he’s in public spaces. “I’m a little skeptical about having a vaccine that hasn’t been proven. “

Baltimore branch NAACP president Dr Kobi Little said the risk of hospitalization and death without the injections was too high.

“In the black community we should be terribly, terribly concerned that our immunization levels are so low because it means we are incredibly vulnerable,” Reverend Little said at a town hall. “There are black zip codes in Baltimore City where the immunization level is 20%. This means that in every group of 10 people, 8 people are not vaccinated. This means that not only a majority, but the vast, overwhelming majority of people are sensitive. “

Mayor Brandon Scott pleaded with people to get their shots again on Wednesday. “100% of deaths during the month of June in Maryland were from unvaccinated residents. It is also clear and simple. Women lie. Men lie. The numbers don’t, ”said Mayor Scott.

Governor Hogan said the vaccine was remarkably effective and revealed to the Public Works Council that there had been very few breakthrough cases among those who had been vaccinated. He said they accounted for 0.07% of infections.

There are now 3,546,233 fully immunized Marylanders. The state administered a total of 7,147,314 doses. From these,3 601 081 are the first doses with 6,630 administered in the last 24 hours. They administered 3,275,034 second doses, 5,818 on the last day.

Dr Esti Schabelman, chief medical officer at Sinai Hospital, advised people to continue to wear their masks indoors in public spaces. The Centers for Disease Control have issued the same guidelines in areas with high transmission rates.

Dr Schabelman told Hellgren time passed before Covid mutated again as cases increased even more. “The virus is spreading exponentially. Yes, we had 400 today, but we had 80 a few weeks ago. So we would expect this virus to spread exponentially, and we could have thousands of it in a matter of weeks. So we have to be very, very careful. We haven’t achieved hearing immunity and there are still a lot of unvaccinated people in Maryland, ”the doctor said.
