Two-time NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo will start for the Milwaukee Bucks against Phoenix in their opening game of the NBA Finals on Tuesday, the Bucks announced just 30 minutes before the start.
The 26-year-old Greek forward suffered hyperextension of his left knee last week in a playoff loss to Atlanta and missed Milwaukee’s last two games, both wins to reach the team’s first NBA Final. since 1974.
“We’re confident he can have a positive impact on winning every time he plays,” Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer said in a pre-game meeting with reporters.
“I know he will give us 100% of what he can give. That’s all you can ask anyone. “
Budenholzer said the Greek star had progressed over the past two days and officially went from questionable to questionable on Tuesday afternoon.
Phoenix Suns coach Monty Williams has said his team are ready for the Bucks whether or not Antetokounmpo has played.
“I think you’ll see several guys on Giannis, if he’s playing. We’re ready for either situation, ”said Williams.
“No one could stop him, but you don’t want to give him everything.
“He’s a decorated All-World player, so we know our team’s defense will have to try to undo what he’s doing effectively.
“We have to remember who we are and establish our word with it. “
