Royal author Robert Lacey, who provides historic assistance to the Netflix show The Crown, detailed the tensions between the Duchess of Sussex and her husband Harry, and her brother the Duke of Cambridge.
According to a new version of Battle of the Brothers, William believed the Suits actress was “stealing her beloved brother.”
When the future king learned of the intimidation allegations made against Meghan by palace staff, he was reportedly “very worried”.
He called his younger brother to discuss things, but Harry reportedly hung up on him.
“When Harry stood up for his wife in anger, the older brother persisted,” Lacey writes.
“Harry angrily turned his phone off, so William went to talk to him personally.
“The prince was horrified by what he had just been told about Meghan’s alleged behavior, and he wanted to hear what Harry had to say. “
The confrontation between Harry and William became so fierce that the older brother separated his home from that of his brother, reports The Times.
The Duke of Cambridge has reportedly told friends Meghan was following an ‘agenda’, while his wife Kate Middleton had been suspicious of the Duchess from the start.
Tensions erupted when Jason Knauf, who worked in communications for the Cambridges and Sussexes, submitted an official email in October 2018 making the bullying allegations.
In response, Meghan reportedly said it was not her job to ‘pamper people’, while a courtier claimed the Duchess ‘ruled by fear’.
When the allegations were first reported, a Sussex spokesperson vehemently denied them.
They said, “Let’s call it just that: a calculated smear campaign based on misleading and damaging disinformation.
“We are disappointed to see this defamatory portrayal of the Duchess of Sussex made credible by a media.
“It is no coincidence that years-old distorted accusations aimed at undermining the Duchess are presented to the British media shortly before she and the Duke speak openly and honestly about their experiences of the past few years. “
The row between William and Harry is believed to have taken place after the third in line for the throne advised his brother not to go too fast with Meghan.
“Don’t feel like you have to rush,” William said, according to the Finding Freedom biography.
Harry was reportedly upset when his brother called Meghan ‘that girl’.
According to Lacey, William was later the one leading the household split, rather than Harry as some had suggested.
Kensington Palace declined to comment.
