Isimemen David Etute, 18, told cops he went to 40-year-old Jerry Smith’s Blacksburg apartment in April for oral sex after meeting a person named “Angie” on Tinder, the Roanoke Times reported.
Etute then returned to the apartment on May 31 for another meeting, when he found out the person he had paired with this time was a male, according to Deputy Commonwealth Lawyer Jason Morgan, citing details. that the now suspended linebacker told the cops.
Etute told investigators he punched Smith five times in the face and “stomped on” him, but did not call the police despite the victim’s “bubbling and gurgling” as he left the apartment. Police found the body of the brutally beaten man a day later, the newspaper reported.
The linebacker’s parents and sister attended Wednesday’s hearing, along with a dozen Virginia Tech soccer players, most of whom wore team clothing, according to the report.
An autopsy revealed Smith, a restaurant worker, died from blunt trauma to the head. All of the bones in her face were broken and her teeth were missing as well, the Roanoke Times reported.
Etute, who is charged with second degree murder, was arrested on June 2. His lawyer, Jimmy Turk, told a judge the case was “more than just a person showing up to an apartment and hitting someone”.
Turk then addressed reporters outside the courtroom.
“No one deserves to die, but I don’t mind saying, don’t pretend you’re something you’re not,” Turk told reporters outside the courtroom. “Do not target or attract anyone under this perception. It is simply not true.
At one point during Wednesday’s bail hearing, Turk reportedly asked Etute – dressed in an orange prison jumpsuit – how he had been affected by the charges.
“Really hard,” Etute said. “I try to stay strong for the people who support me, I feel like I’ve let down a lot of people… I’m so sorry for my actions. “
Etute was released on $ 75,000 bond under house arrest and electronic surveillance, the Roanoke Times reported, citing Commonwealth lawyer Mary Pettitt.
Etute, who will stay with her parents in Virginia Beach, is due to return to court on September 23, WJZY reported.
The linebacker’s team profile was not active on Thursday. He was suspended from the team last week.
Smith’s relatives, meanwhile, reportedly declined to comment after the hearing.
