Three women were killed and five others were seriously injured after a 24-year-old man who is also a Somali immigrant attacked the women in Wuerzburg. The anonymous suspect was later injured in the leg and arrested by the authorities, Reuters reported.
The attack began in a store when the assailant asked where the company kept his knives, said regional police chairman Gerhard Kallert.
He then stabbed and killed the saleswoman and two other people in the store before running out into the street and stabbing five other women and a child.
Police said the suspect had multiple mental health issues since arriving in Germany in 2015, according to Reuters.
Prosecutor Wolfgang Gruendler said he had previously had a knife fight, had been sent for psychiatric treatment twice and had been registered at a homeless shelter.
Regional Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann said authorities were investigating an Islamic motive for the attack as witnesses say the attacker shouted “Allahu akbar” before the rampage.
“The signs of radicalization, in this case Islamism, and psychological problems are not necessarily mutually exclusive (…) this needs to be investigated further,” Herrmann said.
Police Chairman Martin Wilhelm said two women were discharged from hospital and another was still in critical condition.
