ECHO understands that Liverpool are watching Neuhaus but are not necessarily prioritizing adding players to their midfielder this summer, despite the departure of Gini Wijnaldum.
If they move for a player in that area of the pitch, however, a move for Neuhaus is something that’s on the table and could still happen if they move a few fringe players.
Florian Plettenberg, chief journalist at German outlet Sport1, told ECHO on a special podcast by Florian Neuhaus on Blood Red channel that he believed provisional contact had been made with the player’s camp – something something that is standard for probing possible transfer additions.
“There were no concrete negotiations over my information, but there was contact between the player’s management and Liverpool bosses,” Plettenberg said.
“Liverpool are very interested because Neuhaus is a really talented and versatile player and he is one of the best players in the German Bundesliga.
“The question is only when he will take this next step [and transfer away from Borussia Monchengladbach].
“He has a contract until 2024 and he has no release clause, but if there is an offer this summer, then there will be talks with [sporting director] Max Eberl.
“He’s more likely to move next summer, so 2022, but it all depends on Liverpool’s situation – are they putting numbers on the table this year or not? “
While Neuhaus is not actively pushing for a transfer from Gladbach, the Bundesliga team have missed out on Champions League places and, like many clubs in Europe, have been hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic.
If Liverpool made an offer, Plettenberg believes they would consider it – and the player would be interested as well.
“Neuhaus wants to take the plunge, but he also feels very comfortable in Gladbach,” added Plettenberg.

“He wants to take the right step but it’s very important, it’s the best feeling for him in his stomach.
“That’s something he told me – he wants to have a good feeling in the talks and he wants to know that the next club are really interested in him.
“Real Madrid are also interested, and Bayern Munich, but for Bayern it is too expensive this summer.
“Neuhaus is a huge Bayern Munich fan and his father is one of Bayern’s biggest fans, so Bayern are totally in the race for him.
“But Neuhaus told me last week that he can imagine going abroad and that he doesn’t have to go to Bayern Munich – he’s totally open and flexible.

“I think the only clubs that can pay for Neuhaus this summer are the Premier League clubs and maybe Liverpool – Liverpool are the most interested club right now. ”
Germany faces France in the opening match of Euro 2020 on Tuesday evening.
Neuhaus is not expected to start, with Ilkay Gundogan, Toni Kroos and Leon Goretzka all ahead of him in the pecking order, but is hoping to gain a few minutes on the bench.
