Watch live as fans arrive at Wembley Stadium for the England v Scotland game

England host Scotland at Wembley Stadium tonight in what is expected to be a hotly contested Group D match at Euro 2020.

England kicked off their campaign on Sunday with a 1-0 victory over Croatia, while Scotland fought valiantly in front of a boisterous Glasgow crowd but lost 2-0 to the Czech Republic at Hampden Park on Monday. Steve Clarke’s men, defeated by a brace from Patrik Schick the last time that included the competition goal so far, might just need a win here to give themselves a chance to qualify for the last 16, although most fans and pundits will expect Gareth Southgate’s players to beat the Scots comfortably. Visitors cannot be written off, however, with talented footballers such as Andy Robertson of Liverpool, Scott McTominay of Manchester United and John McGinn of Aston Villa in their ranks.

The last time these two home countries met on such an important stage was at Euro 96 – the scene of Scotland’s last appearance in a major men’s tournament – with the Three Lions winning 2 -0, in part thanks to Paul Gascoigne’s iconic goal on the fly, which was followed by his iconic ‘dentist chair’ celebration. Will it take a moment of similar magic to settle this tie at Wembley? We’re about to find out. Follow England vs Scotland live updates at Euro 2020 below.

Euro 2020: Clarke on Gilmour’s departure

Billy Gilmour received his first start for Scotland by manager Steve Clarke who spoke to ITV about the decision to play the 20-year-old tonight. He said:
“I hope we have a good performance and get something out of the game because we want to stay in the tournament as long as possible. Billy likes to play with the ball and make the teams play, he did it for Chelsea, I’m sure he can do it for Scotland too.
“To come here and play two forwards is brave, we have three center-backs at the other end as well as a bit of a mix and match – we have to respect them but we think we can cause them problems – they will cause us problems. but hope we get the right result.
“England are favorites, probably in the tournament, England will always be one of the great teams, we respect them but we don’t fear them. “

Euro 2020: the last time England met Scotland

The last meeting between the two sides was a Belter. They met in the first round of World Cup qualifying, with Scotland hosting the match at Hampden Park in Glasgow.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain opened the scoring in the 70th minute before two minutes after a late free kick from Leigh Griffiths in the 87th and 90th minutes apparently gave Gordon Strachan the victory in Scotland.
However, Harry Kane’s goal after three minutes into added time saved a 2-2 draw for England.
The draw extended England’s unbeaten streak against their neighbors to four games since a 1-0 loss to Scotland at Wembley in the return leg of their Euro 2000 play-off.

Euro 2020: Southgate bets on qualification

Despite all the noise surrounding a clash between England and Scotland, it’s easy to forget that England can advance to the round of 16 if they win tonight.
This is not the case for England manager Gareth Southgate, who is only focused on the job at hand. He says:

We know we have to be competitive because otherwise you can get passed in any game. Our goal must be to ensure that performance improves with every game we play.

“For the fans and us it’s a great opportunity but it’s another three-point opportunity and our goal is to qualify. This is what we need to focus on.

“In the past, we have done it very well. We did it on Sunday which was a great opportunity for everyone and we handled it really well. “

Euro 2020: Declan Rice talks about Scotland

Ahead of the game, England’s Declan Rice spoke to ITV about being the favorite for tonight’s clash against Scotland and how his side will face Steve Clarke’s men’s threat. He said:
« [This is] The biggest [game of my career] – the rivalry over the years and how much we talk about it. We want to go out there and do the job and qualify. It’s a huge night and we have to do a good performance.
“They have good players, they weren’t lucky against the Czech Republic, we have to be wary of the way they play, they have good players like Kieran Tierney and Andy Robertson so we’ll be ready for anything – we want to impose the way we play and hope to score a couple.
“The mentality has changed – we never go into a game hoping to win – we just want to think we can play well to win the game. “

Euro 2020: Super Sterling the key for England?

Raheem Sterling’s 57th-minute winner against Croatia last Sunday gave the Three Lions campaign a perfect start. The Man City forward struggled for form towards the end of the domestic season, but for his country he has excelled recently.
Sterling has scored 13 goals in his last 17 international appearances for England and they have won all 11 games in which he has scored.

Euro 2020: How will Scotland approach the game?

Scotland’s tactical approach did not work out against the Czech Republic in their Euro 2020 opener on Monday, so what changes are needed for a trip to Wembley to face group favorites England ?
Steve Clarke has made four personnel changes and looks likely to set up his squad with a back three, allowing Andy Robertson and Stephen O’Donnell more room to roam the wide areas.
Scotland will need to work to stay in shape, pressing and blocking frequently. Che Adams and Lydon Dykes are in the lead and will face John Stones and Tyrone Mings. If they can cause problems for England center-backs and put them out of shape, there’s a good chance Scotland can worry England.

“Yes, Harry will be involved. The decision we have to make is whether he’s ready to go, but we’re really happy with his progress.

We are in the final phase now. More than an hour before England kick off against Scotland at Wembley. Scottish fans flocked to London throughout the day with only around 2,800 spectators allowed into the stadium to watch the game.
