TORONTO – When people had to work from home due to the pandemic, sales of home office equipment increased, including items like headphones and earphones.

Some companies have released new high-end wireless and noise-canceling models like Samsung, which released the Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro in January of this year.

Johnny Cheng from North York bought a pair for around $ 260, but said the moment he started using them he felt irritation in his ears almost immediately.

“I started to get itchy every time I put them on,” Cheng said.

Cheng said he didn’t wear them very often, but each time the irritation got worse, so he stopped using them because they got too painful to wear.

“I started to itch in both ears and one of the ears was getting really red and hot liquid started to flow from my ear,” Cheng said.

When he searched on Google, he found that other users around the world had had a bad reaction to the headphones as well.

A Samsung message board with customer comments showed users complaining of “allergic reactions”, “burning sensation in my ear” and ears that had become “wet and inflamed”.

Cheng said that by contacting Samsung Canada, someone withdrew their complaint, but said no one responded to him.

“They are very comfortable and everything is perfect in the technical specifications. It seems to be the silicone, that there is something in this material that is irritating people, ”Cheung said.

CTV News Toronto contacted Samsung Canada and a spokesperson told us, “Customer satisfaction is Samsung’s top priority.

“Although rare, some people experience a reaction to wearing headphones. This can be due to a variety of factors such as allergies, wearing the earbuds for extended periods of time, exposure to sweat or skin care products, and other usage patterns. We encourage customers to follow the device care and use instructions and encourage any customer with questions regarding their Galaxy Buds Pro to contact us directly at 1-800-SAMSUNG.

Consumer Reports has indicated that headphone and earphone cleaning is necessary after prolonged use.

In Cheng’s case, he said he only used the Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro a few times. After contacting Samsung, Cheung received a full refund.

Some people may be more prone to irritation when using earbuds. If you happen to stop using them and have headphones or earbuds, you might want to check the cleaning instructions as cleaning can also help them sound better and last longer.
