The Rockies are surely happy to welcome their top player back into the fold, but the club’s biggest goal out of contention is Story’s impending free agency. The 28-year-old is among the best players expected to hit the open market in a few months. It certainly looks like Story won’t end up re-signing with the Rockies, making him one of the players most likely to change teams this summer. MLBTR’s Steve Adams placed Story as the second-best business contender in the league last week, behind his teammate Jon Gray.
It hasn’t been a record season so far for Story. He had started at a start of .255 / .322 .424 before switching to IL. Either way, there will be a lot of interest from competitors as the deadline approaches thanks to its strong track record. Between 2018-20, he hit an impressive .292 / .355 / .545 with 83 home runs in 1,571 home plate appearances.
