“What makes this meal really worth eating?” “
If you don’t know who Regé-Jean Page is, I’m assuming you’re SpongeBob SquarePants’ neighbor Patrick Star – because you live under a rock.
However, I will make you happy: Regé-Jean Page is the star of Netflix Bridgerton series whose impossible beauty is matched only by its incredible talent. Like, LOOK at that smile, will you ?!
And this week, Régé sat down with The crown star Emma Corrin for Variety’s Actors on Actors series, where he explained how he felt during the audition for his flagship role of Simon Basset, and how he believes Bridgerton actually has a lot more to say about masculinity than it seems:
“I was like, ‘OK, cool. It is a period drama. It’s Jane Austen-esque. Why are we doing this now? What does this have to bring? ‘ », Said Regé in reference to what he had felt during the first reading of the scenario. .
“We’ve got a few hundred years between Jane Austen and where we are now, which means we’ve had five or six waves of feminism for the past five or six waves. And so, by carrying the torch, we have to make ground with it. ”
“Because Simon is an archetype that already exists,” he continued. “It’s Darcy. It’s Heathcliff. He is a tall, dark, brooding, and emotionally stunted man.
Emma went on to note that she viewed Simon’s journey on the show as an ‘unboxing of masculinity’, to which Regé warmly agreed.
“Yeah, and the idea of romantic heroes… when you say the word ‘hero’ it implies he’s someone you admire,” he said. “We talk a lot with Bridgerton it’s focused on women, but also, what are men looking for? “
He then finalized his point by making a delightful McDonald’s-themed analogy, saying, “What am I doing with this icon of masculinity? What makes this meal really worth eating? I think about Bridgerton like a Happy Meal, but with secret vitamins. It’s like a secretly healthy organic burger. “
However – to continue his analogy – it seems that our “Happy Meal” is going to be a little less happy for season 2, since the character of Regé will not appear in the new season!
