Listen, not everyone knows everything about Star Trek. Some of us have seen a few movies, a handful of episodes of The next generation, and get the gist of things. That said, the trailer for season two of Picard, the return of Patrick Stewart to the world of Star Trek, is for Trekkies and the occasional fan who remembers most of the Star Trek: The Next Generation. If you don’t fall for that camp, well, it’ll cause a lot of confusion.
The trailer opens with Picard in crisis, when it is revealed that longtime nemesis Q (John de Lancie) is at home. Q has a few heartwarming words for the aging Enterprise captain: “Welcome, my friend, to the end of the untapped road. Judging by the confusion on the faces of the rest of the cast, Picard jumps into something alternate reality-timeline flow.
One thing that even a casual hiking the viewer will notice, however, the appearance of Jeri Ryan, reprising his character Seven of Nine, a Borg (I saw Premier contact, so don’t @me), who no longer has his little robot eyebrow. Is it “the road not taken”? More robot eyebrows? Looks like you’re gonna have to watch Picard discover.
Jeri Ryan and John de Lancie are not the only ones Star Trek alums planned for this season. Data from Brent Spiner is also supposed to make an appearance, which should continue to fuel theories about how an android can age (plus, don’t complain if they explain this in the first season, not everyone. haven’t seen it!).
Picard Season two is coming to Paramount + in 2022, and speaking like someone who’s never seen an episode on the show, it looks pretty good. Maybe it’s time to make it all up Star Trek thing. Uh, too intimidating.
