Actor John Paragon, best known for his role as Jambi the Genius in Pee-wee’s Playhouse, has died aged 66.

TMZ reports that the star died in April of “unknown causes”, with news of her death not being made public until this week.

The Emmy nominee is best known for playing Jambi on the children’s television show that ran from 1986 to 1990 alongside Paul Reubens as Pee-wee Herman.

The character, known for his blue face and red and gold turban, appeared in a jewelry box whenever Pee-wee Herman wanted something.

In addition to his on-screen role, Paragon also voiced Pterri the Pterodactyl on the series and wrote several episodes of Pee-wee’s Playhouse, including the 1988 Christmas special with Reubens.

Paragon was nominated for an Emmy Award for Best Writing in a Children’s Program Special for his work on the episode.

His other roles included appearances in Seinfeld – where he played Cedric, half of the couple Bob and Cedric – Cheers and Saturday Night Live as well as films including The Frog Prince, Double Trouble and Pandemonium.

He’s also written several projects he’s starred in, including Elvira: Mistress of the Dark, Twin Sitters, and The Paragon of Comedy.

Most recently, Paragon worked with Walt Disnet Imagineering to have wways incorporate improvisational performances at Disney theme parks, most notably as the keeper of Lucky the Dinosaur during the animatronic figure tests.

He also reprized the role of Jambi in the Broadway release of the Pee-wee Herman show in 2010.

Paragon was born in Alaska and raised in Colorado, later joining Los Angeles improv group The Groundlings, where he met Reubens.
