JUNE 26: Freddy Galvis was taken off the field in today’s loss to the Blue Jays. The team described the injury as discomfort to the right quadriceps. A roster change looks likely to follow, with Galvis moving towards the injured list, according to MASNsports.com’s Roch Kubatko.
As well as being one of the Orioles’ most vocal veteran leaders, the much-respected shortstop and first glove was a potential trade for general manager Mike Elias. With just over a month to go until the trade deadline, Baltimore will have to wait and see the severity of Galvis’ injury to see if he could still be considered a trade chip. Galvis was worth 0.9 rWAR while reducing .246 / .304 / .411 in 273 plate appearances.
Waiting, Pat Valaïka took over at the shortstop today, while Ramon Urias or Domingo Leyba seem more likely to get Triple-A’s call for more consistent playing time. For what it’s worth neither Urias nor Leyba were in the starting lineup for Triple-A Norfolk tonight, Remarks Kubatko, suggesting that one or both might be on their way to Buffalo. The Orioles will play a day game against the Blue Jays tomorrow.
