Glaslyn Artisan Ice Cream & Pizza in Beddgelert won the award at the 2021 National Ice Cream Championships.
It is the country’s most prestigious ice cream competition, organized by the Ice Cream Alliance (ICA), the UK trade association for the industry, and has been in existence for 76 years.
He won first prize for his blackcurrant sorbet.
“Winning gold for the UK’s best sorbet is so special,” said owner Bonnie Rowley.
“It’s been a really tough few years, first tackling the takeover of the family business in 2019 and then leading it through the pandemic since 2020.
“So winning such a prestigious award makes all the hard work worth it. I am so proud of our team. Our intern production manager, Derwyn Roberts, made the winning blackcurrant sorbet, along with Ryan Richards. “
Bonnie is the third generation to run this ice cream parlor, café and pizzeria.
They specialize in dairy-free sorbets that contain real fruit and are naturally stronger in flavor and less fat. They are also a fantastic alternative to traditional dairy ice cream for those who cannot eat dairy or follow a vegan diet. The company takes sustainability seriously and its priority over the next few years is to become carbon neutral or even negative.
The company employs 20 people.
The championships are normally held at the Ice Cream and Artisan Food Show in Harrogate and hundreds of products are featured in thirteen categories. Due to the pandemic, this show has been canceled.
“The ICA has decided that despite the severe bottlenecks and restrictions on trade, we must show the resilience of our sectors by pursuing these annual awards,” said Zelica Carr, CEO of ICA.
“I would like to thank everyone who participated and our dedicated panel of judges who tasted the entries and selected the winners in a socially distanced and secure Covid process at our head office.
“Congratulations to Bonnie and her team.
“The competition was very tough in this category so winning gold is a big achievement. “
