Sean Smith, now 16, sent the missive while on vacation in Rhode Island for Thanksgiving in 2018.
A note inside read, “It’s Thanksgiving. I’m 13 and visiting family in Rhode Island. I am from Vermont. If found an email [email protected] »
Fast forward to 2021, and the post was discovered by Christian Santos, a 17-year-old from the Azores, a small Portuguese archipelago.
He explained that he regularly collects trash floating in the water in an effort to help the environment – and decided to follow the instructions in the Powerade bottle.
Christian’s email almost fell on deaf ears because Sean forgot he sent the bottle as a child and couldn’t remember the password for the email account.
Fortunately, Sean realized that his bottle had been found after a Facebook post by Molly, Christian’s mother.
The couple have now met on Zoom for the very first time and plan to keep in touch.
“I think it’s cool that someone the same age found him so far away and we were able to get in touch,” Sean said.
