Lexus has officially unveiled the newest car in its lineup and yes, it’s a crossover. The 2022 Lexus NX sports a familiar face, which closely resembles the outgoing model. This follows, as the outgoing model sold in droves.

The similarities between this and the old model are checked at the door, however, as this NX has a brand new interface inside that finally updates the old and tired one and upgrades the cabin. It’s high time, Lexus!

More information on the new sophisticated user interface will be available soon. Spoiler alert: it’s good!

Lexus will also offer many different NX models, ranging from forced induction to naturally aspirated and partially electrified transmissions. Indeed, with this new version of NX, Lexus is channeling its interior Van Morrison because there is something here to alla.

The default or de facto model of the new crossover is the NX 350, which sports a turbocharged mill and has a respectable set of performance specs, per Lexus:

The new lower center of gravity and improvements in vehicle stiffness allow for a more powerful 2.4 turbo gasoline engine on the NX 350. The new 8-speed transmission gives the NX gasoline the feel of a performance vehicle. with the higher perspective of a utility vehicle crossover. This is made possible by improving torsional stiffness through laser shot peening welding and the addition of high stiffness foam, Lexus first two.

The exciting turbo gasoline engine delivers an estimated output of 275 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. Combined, they give a 0-60 time of 6.8 seconds, half a second faster than the previous model.

The Japanese automaker is also talking about two hybrid models. One of them is a PHEV called NX 450h +. This model will be very fast and have a decent all-electric range, as Lexus describes it:

The NX 450h + has a manufacturer’s estimated range of 36 miles on power alone, made possible by the new high-capacity lithium-ion battery. The system achieves the EV output equivalent to a 2.0-liter engine. When paired with the new hybrid transaxle, a 2.5-liter inline-4 engine delivers the performance luxury customers are looking for with an estimated 0-60 second time of 6.0 seconds.

The NX450h + uses an electronically controlled permanent AWD system for a sporty and confident driving experience. By optimizing the front and rear torque distribution according to driving conditions, the driver can control the vehicle as intended. In the corners, the NX AWD offers exhilarating yet stylish control for normal to aggressive riding styles.

What is sorely lacking in this quote is how beautiful the blue finish is:

The other partially electrified model is the NX 350h, which is not a plug-in hybrid model but will still be a good alternative for those who want good MPG:

With the all-new Lexus NX 350h, customers can enjoy both excellent performance and fuel economy. With a combined output of 239 horsepower (a 20% increase over the current model) and an impressive manufacturer estimated at 36 MPG (a 6 MPG increase over the current model), the NX Hybrid brings a powerful performance that exemplifies hybrid brand leadership. Guests will also notice the faster 0-60 time with 1.5 seconds reducing the time of previous generations to 7.2 seconds.

In case you’re wondering, the new NX will be an F Sport model – or two – that sport a cooler exterior and sportier suspension, to start:

I much prefer a nice sedan, and whatever the cost of this NX it will likely be competitive with some of Lexus’ four-door cars, but buyers have voted.

These things will probably fly away! The price of the new NX models is still unknown. Lexus says pricing will be revealed as we get closer to the NX’s sale date, which is a long way off. The production, not the sale, of this new NX is scheduled for the end of 2021.
