With one day before Euro 2020, the teams are preparing for the first match of the tournament. Germany will start the tournament against France on June 15. The German national team have suffered a heavy blow for this game as Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka is expected to miss this game due to injury.
Léon Goretzka has been on the sidelines since early May. The German midfielder has not made it to Bayern’s last league games of the season. Until early last week, Goretzka was not training on the pitch.
The 26-year-old midfielder finally started training on the pitch in the middle of last week. He trained away from the squad with Toni Kroos, who recovered from COVID-19 ahead of the opener against France.
Goretzka was previously scheduled to play against France. However, Oliver Bierhoff confirmed on Thursday (via iMiaSanMia) that Goretzka will not be available for the game against France. Leon Goretzka has started training with the squad, but he is considering a comeback against Portugal in the second group game.
“He’s able to train with the team, but he won’t be an option for the first game. Leon is an incredibly important player and I’m sure he will end up playing a vital role for us.
In the emphatic victory over Latvia, Kroos and Ilkay Gundogan formed the midfield duo. With Goretzka out of the game against France, Joachim Low is expected to stay with Kroos and Gundogan in the center of the park. The German manager is expected to stay with the three at the back, allowing Joshua Kimmich to play the right-winger role.
Kimmich was impressive for Die Roten in the middle of the park. However, Germany have some good options in the central midfielder, but no one better than Kimmich as a right-back / winger-back. Kimmich is very productive in this role due to his sense of position and consistency in the killer pass game.
Niklas Sule and Jamal Musiala will be fit for the game against France. Both players have also had minor injury issues in recent weeks, but have played for Germany in friendlies. Sule is not a guaranteed start in central defense, while Musiala will likely be a generic option for Low on the bench at Euro 2020.

Thomas Muller played a fluid role in the attack on Latvia. The German striker is registered on the scoresheet. His form will be crucial for Germany’s hopes of going far in the competition. In defense, Mats Hummels will also bring much needed experience to make Germany a strong unit.
