Perisic leaves for Croatia with Covid
Croatia will be without Ivan Perisic in their last 16-game against Spain in the European Championship on Monday, after the 32-year-old winger tested positive for COVID-19, the team said on Saturday.
“The medical staff isolated Ivan from the other members of the national team and immediately and fully informed the relevant epidemiological authorities of the situation,” Croatia said in a statement.
“Perisic will spend 10 days in isolation and during this period will not participate in the matches of the Croatian national team. “
All other players and staff have tested negative, the team added.
Perisic’s loss is a blow to World Cup finalist Croatia as they look to overtake a Spanish side that hit their stride with a 5-0 victory over Slovakia.
Perisic’s stunning second-half equalizer against the Czech Republic ensured a 1-1 draw to save Croatia’s tournament in the group stage.
He also netted a goal and scored one himself late in the 3-1 win over Scotland on Tuesday to ensure Zlatko Dalic’s side reached the knockout stage.
Croatia, quarter-finalists in 1996 and 2008, face Spain at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen on Monday as they seek to advance to the final eight for the third time.
