Countdown to Euro 2020: daily briefing

Follow live coverage of Italy against Turkey as Euro 2020 kicks off in Rome this evening after the tournament’s opening ceremony.

The tournament, delayed for 12 months by the coronavirus pandemic, finally kicks off Friday evening before a football party next month across the continent where Europe’s best team will be crowned.

Roberto Mancini’s Italy are one of 11 host nations and will begin their campaign as a Group A favorite when they face the Turks at Stadio Olimpico tonight, before group rivals Wales and Spain. Switzerland, will meet tomorrow in Baku.

The Italian team is a mix of veterans – with Leonardo Bonucci, Giorgio Chiellini and Jorginho – and young talent like Alessandro Bastoni and Federico Chiesa. Whatever team Roberto Mancini chooses, it will be full of quality.

Turkey is seen as a dark horse in some quarters, however, having beaten the Netherlands 4-2 in a World Cup qualifier earlier this year. Burak Yilmaz is a constant goal threat and his battle will be intriguing with the Italian defense.

Follow all the latest Stadio Olimpico set-ups and actions – including this opening ceremony – here:

Euro 2020: Burak Yilmaz is Turkey’s key man

35-year-old Lille veteran and Turkey captain Burak Yilmaz ages like fine wine.
He has been in great form in Ligue 1 all season and has enjoyed a well-timed scoring streak internationally, which has earned him his nickname ‘Kral’ (King) deservedly.
By propelling Lille to the Ligue 1 title, he was named player of the season, alongside Kylian Mbappé, Neymar, Wissam Ben Yedder and Memphis Depay.
Lille coach Christophe Galtier said of him: “Burak is used to winning titles in Turkey, he’s been through big clubs there, and you see that in all the preparation he does. He is focused on the competition. He is a driving force. “
Yilmaz has scored 29 goals in 67 games for his country and he could be the deciding factor for Turkey to advance to the round of 16.

Euro 2020: can Turkey really upset?

In his second stint at the helm of Turkey, after inspiring the memorable run in Korea and Japan, Şenol Güneş built a dangerous team capable of scaring any of Europe’s most illustrious opponents.
Although they eventually finished second in qualifying against France, their victory over the world champions in Konya proved far from unique, with Germany and Croatia held 3-3 in a friendly and the Netherlands beaten 4-2 at the World Cup. Qualifying for the Cup earlier this year:

Euro 2020: the Italian group gives Immobile its chance to shine

Distinguished by Italian coach Marcello Lippi, World Cup winner Ciro Immobile won the coveted European Golden Boot by tying the Serie A record with 36 goals in the 2019/20 season. However, the Lazio forward has failed to replicate his club form on the international stage.
After averaging 25 goals per season in his last five Serie A campaigns, the 31-year-old has been disappointing for his country with just 12 goals in 45 caps, many against European minnows.
The group matches against Turkey, Switzerland and Wales offer Immobile a great opportunity to improve this record and propel Italy to the knockout stages.

Euro 2020: Turkey’s history with the Euros

This is Turkey’s fifth appearance at a European Championship, having made her debut in the final in 1996. She has reached the quarter-finals of Euro 2000 and the last four of Euro 2008, but failed to qualify for the 2004 and 2012 tournaments.
Four years ago, Fatih Terim’s side finished third in their section behind Croatia and Spain, missing a place in the round of 16 despite a 2-0 victory over the Czech Republic. That proved insufficient for a place in the round of 16 following losses to Croatia (0-1) and Spain (0-3), with the latter result equaling Turkey’s biggest loss in the final of the Euro.
