Euro 2020: Daily briefing

Watch all the action as Portugal welcome Germany to Euro 2020 Group F this afternoon.

The reigning champions opened their campaign with a 3-0 win over Hungary, however, that score hardly told the full story of a game in which they struggled to break through their opponents. In fact, only a chance deflection eventually broke Raphael Guerreiro’s shot from the deadlock after 84 minutes, before Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice in the later stages to become the tournament’s top scorer in history.

Fernando Santos has warned his side that they cannot just rely on Ronaldo’s brilliance and that they will have to produce a better performance against Germany. Joachim Low’s side suffered a 1-0 loss to France in their opener and know that another loss will seal their fate in the “Group of Death”. “We know the pressure builds with a loss,” said the outgoing head coach. “We can handle the pressure. I have known the pressure for 15 years in this business. There is no situation that I cannot handle. We need a good result to keep our place in the last 16, but the pressure will not stifle us.

WITHOUT ANY GOAL! The opening of Gosens canceled by the VAR

6 minutes: It’s a reprieve for Portugal. Matthias Ginter swung the cross into the box on the right side. Serge Gnabry throws himself on the center but misses it, the ball then returns to Gosens who hits it at the near post. It was a nice finish but that doesn’t count. Gnabry was offside when the ball came in and when he went to play the ball the goal is scored.
