Journalists criticize Biden for giving US journalists “less access than previous administrations” at NATO summit – –

Frustrated US journalists from several mainstream media called President Biden on Monday for excluding them from a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the last minute, leaving them confused and forced to rely on the communications team Erdogan for public updates.

The US press pool that accompanied Biden on the trip was initially granted access to the meeting at the annual NATO summit. But in a last-minute White House decision, American journalists were excluded from the room. The move came just a day after Biden told reporters at a press conference in the UK that he “would be in trouble” with his staff if he didn’t finish his remarks.

Reporters on Twitter said they only learned the meeting was underway from Erdogan’s press office, which tweeted footage of the meeting. Turkish television reportedly broadcast a video of the introduction between the two leaders.

Prominent journalists – many of whom have come under fire for protecting the Biden administration throughout its tenure – called the White House on Twitter for barring access to the U.S. press from the room.

“Biden is overseas making a big push on democracy versus autocracy. BUT the American press – a key part of any functioning democracy – has had less access than under previous administrations. account, ”wrote Ashley Parker, Washington Post bureau chief at the White House.

“The US press pool has been standing for over an hour outside of this meeting with limited access again today to @POTUS – after significant access issues over the weekend at G- 7 ″, noted CBS, ”noted Ed O’Keefe. “In the meantime, the Turkish president quickly posted photos of their current meeting. “

“The American press is still waiting for access to President Biden’s meeting with the Turkish president,” CNN’s Kaitlyn Collins said. “The Turkish government is tweeting photos of their meeting which is apparently underway. “

Jennifer Jacobs of Bloomberg News said the press pool was forced to wait outside the room in the hallway.

“Turkish officials tweet photos of President Biden meeting with Erdogan, while the White House roving press pool, which was supposed to cover the start of the bilateral, waits outside in the hallway,” she wrote.

After waiting outside the room for nearly two hours, the American reporters were allowed to enter the room where Biden and Erdogan were seated in front of a table joined by their respective staff.

“We had a really good meeting,” Biden said.

A reporter explained that the pool was having trouble hearing the president.

“Because I didn’t say anything,” Biden retorted.

The American press pool was then quickly escorted out of the room.
