EXCLUSIVE: Supernatural, one of the most important series in CW history, plans a return with a new iteration with prequel Les Winchester, centered on the parents of Dean and Sam Winchester. The project, currently in development within the network, is produced by Supernatural star Jensen Ackles, who will also reprise his character as Dean Winchester as the narrator for the new series, and Ackles’ wife, Supernatural recurring guest star Danneel.
Les Winchester, who has a script commitment, is writing / executive produced by another Supernatural alum, former co-executive producer Robbie Thompson.

Before Sam and Dean, there were John and Mary. Told from the perspective of narrator Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles), Les Winchester is the epic, never-before-seen love story of how John met Mary and how they put everything on the line to not only save their love, but the whole world.

Jensen and Danneel Ackles produce through their company, Chaos Machine Productions, which the duo launched last fall with a global deal with Warner Bros. Television, the studio behind Supernatural which also produces Les Winchester in association with Chaos Machine.

“After Supernatural finished its 15th season, we knew it was not over. Because, as we say on the show, “nothing ever really ends, does it? “,” Jensen Ackles told Deadline. “When Danneel and I formed Chaos Machine Productions, we knew that the first story we wanted to tell was the story of John and Mary Winchester, or rather the Supernatural origin story. I always felt that my character, Dean, wanted to know more about his parents’ relationship and how it came about. So I like the idea that he takes us on this journey.

Supernatural, which wrapped up its 15-season series last fall, starred Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki as brothers Dean and Sam Winchester who hunt demons, ghosts, monsters and other supernatural beings. John and Mary were played in the series by Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Samantha Smith. Mary was killed by a demon while Sam was still a baby. Investigating his death, John becomes a hunter and then passes his knowledge and skills on to his sons. John was a recurring character in the first season and passed away in the season 2 premiere.

Supernatural, created by Eric Kripke, hails from the WB and is the longest-running sci-fi / genre series in American television history. A fan favorite – and CW chairman Mark Pedwoitz – the show has enjoyed loyal following and strong network support. The CW has made two previous attempts to launch a Supernatural spin-off with Bloodlines and Rebel sisters, both of whom were introduced as backdoor pilots.

And Les Winchester moving forward, the CW will have the two stars of Supernatural back home ; Padalecki is star / executive producer of Walker, which is heading towards a second season.

Onscreen, Jensen Ackles will next be seen in a new, high-profile role as Soldier Boy in Season 3 of Amazon’s hit series. The boys. He and Danneel are replaced by Gersh, Management 360 and Ziffren Brittenham.

Thompson was on Supernatural for five years, becoming co-executive producer. He was recently co-executive producer on Netflix Damn. He is replaced by Artists First and Mark Wetzstein.
