During a network interview with host Alisyn Camerota, Mr. Toobin, CNN’s senior legal analyst, was confronted with his colleague about his actions leading up to his departure from The new yorker and his personal leave from CNN. Mr Toobin had not appeared on the network since the October incident and was fired by the magazine in November following a suspension.
“I think we should address what has happened in the months since we saw you [last] Began the interview, Ms. Camerota, before immediately plunging into the heart of the matter.
“In October, you were on a Zoom call with your colleagues from The new yorker magazine. Everyone took a break of several minutes, during which you were caught masturbating in front of the camera, ”Ms. Camerota said, before adding. “To quote Jay Leno, what the hell were you thinking? “
“Well, obviously I wasn’t thinking very well, or very well,” Mr. Toobin replied.
Mr. Toobin went on to say that although there was no real defense for his actions, he “didn’t think people could see me” while performing the sex act in front of his computer.
“It was deeply stupid and indefensible,” he told CNN on Thursday.
“There is no defense for my conduct,” he added.

The awkward interview is the first sign that Mr Toobin may become a regular again at the network he was previously a part of before his leave began last year.
Representatives of the network previously referred to Mr. Toobin’s fate in a brief statement to Le New York Times last fall, explaining that the legal analyst “requested time off while dealing with a personal issue, which we granted.”
Condé Nast, owner The new yorker, at the time, he spoke about the need to foster a respectful work environment when Mr. Toobin was fired in November.
The incident also resulted in Mr. Toobin’s indefinite ban from programs produced by New York Public Radio, as the call in which Mr. Toobin’s sex act took place also included WNYC employees, a New York radio station.
